Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that interacts with the N-terminal region of BRCA1. It shares homology with conserved BRCA1 regions, including the N-terminal RING motif and the C-terminal BRCT domain. The RING motif is a cysteine-rich sequence found in proteins regulating cell growth, including tumor suppressors and proto-oncogenes. BARD1 also contains three tandem ankyrin repeats. The BARD1/BRCA1 interaction is disrupted by tumorigenic BRCA1 mutations, suggesting that their stable complex formation is crucial for BRCA1 tumor suppression. Mutations in BARD1 may be implicated in breast or ovarian cancer.
