Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 different CKs are identified, classified as type I (acidic) or type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and marks stratified epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic CKs are expressed in all epithelial cells.
