Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein consisting of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of secondary granules of neutrophils.
Lactoferrin exhibits diverse biological functions including:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
LTF acts as a first-line defense against microbial infections by binding and removing Fe³⁺ from the environment. It also exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activity, capable of cleaving arginine-rich microbial proteins. Three isoforms—LTF-α, LTF-β, and LTF-γ—have been identified. LTF receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and certain bacteria.
