Target Information
The genus Streptococcus includes a variety of pathogenic and commensal gram-positive bacteria found in humans and animals such as horses, pigs, and cows. They commonly inhabit mucosal surfaces of the mouth, nares, and pharynx, but can also be found in the skin, heart, or muscle tissue.
While many streptococci are part of the natural flora, under certain conditions they can cause disease. Group A and B streptococci are particularly significant in medicine due to their association with severe infections.
