Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in bone marrow and the immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP), which includes additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts. Golli mRNAs encode hybrid proteins linking N-terminal Golli sequences to MBP sequences, while the second family encodes classic myelin basic proteins. This conserved gene structure suggests functional and regulatory importance of the Golli-MBP transcription unit.
