Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in bone marrow and the immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) containing additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing of Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts:
- Golli-MBP transcripts: contain unique Golli exons linked in-frame to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli sequence.
- MBP transcripts: contain only MBP exons, producing the classic myelin basic proteins.
This conserved gene structure suggests functional and regulatory importance across species.
