Target Information
Vesicle-associated membrane proteins (VAMPs), also known as synaptobrevins, are calcium-binding proteins specific to eukaryotes. VAMPs, along with SNAP-25 and syntaxin, form the core SNARE complex that mediates vesicle membrane fusion with the plasma membrane.
Clostridium tetani neurotoxin specifically cleaves VAMP. In Alzheimer’s disease, VAMP levels are significantly reduced. VAMP2 is a resident protein of the insulin-sensitive GLUT4 compartment and is required for GLUT4 vesicle incorporation into the cell surface in response to insulin.
