Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the membrane-associated guanylate kinase-like (MAGUK) protein family, characterized by multiple PDZ domains, a single SH3 domain, and a guanylate kinase-like (GUK) domain. Members of the zonula occludens subfamily also contain an acidic domain, a basic arginine-rich region, and a proline-rich domain. This protein links the actin cytoskeleton to tight junctions and sequesters cyclin D1 during mitosis. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms, and a partial pseudogene exists on chromosome 1.
