Target Information
Plasminogen is a plasma protein synthesized mainly in the liver. It consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 88.5 kDa and a plasma concentration typically between 70–200 mg/L. Activation by tissue-plasminogen activator, urokinase, or streptokinase converts plasminogen to plasmin through cleavage of the preactivation peptide. Plasmin comprises a heavy (A) chain with five kringles and a light (B) chain containing the active site. It is a trypsin-like protease that acts on fibrin, essential for fibrinolysis. Defects in plasmin activity can result in recurrent thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, and pulmonary embolism.
