Target Information

Heme oxygenase (HO) is a microsomal enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of heme to biliverdin and carbon monoxide, both of which have antioxidant properties. HO consists of two homologous isozymes: an inducible HO-1 and a constitutively expressed HO-2.
HO-1 expression is induced by oxidative stress, inflammatory agents, transforming growth factor beta, and heat shock. Elevated HO-1 is considered a cellular defense mechanism against oxidative stress, as increased HO activity can generate more bilirubin, an antioxidant molecule.
