Target Information
Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal development. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence can occur without pathology. AFP functions as the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located tandemly on chromosome 4. AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms, and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. Elevated AFP levels are used as biomarkers in screening for neural tube defects and are associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal, pancreatic cancers, and germ cell tumors.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
