Target Information

The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in assembling small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), essential components of the spliceosome. This complex is critical for pre-mRNA splicing. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of snRNA. In the cytosol, Sm proteins are held in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and facilitates Sm protein transfer to form core snRNPs, which are then transported to the nucleus. GEMIN5 acts as the snRNA-binding protein of the SMN complex.
