Target Information
In response to adverse environmental changes, cells from many organisms increase the expression of heat shock proteins. One class, the small heat shock proteins, includes diverse proteins ranging from approximately 15 to >30 kDa. A direct relationship between elevated stress protein expression and neoplasia has been suggested in studies of estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer cells. Hsp27 shows rapid phosphorylation in response to mitogens, tumor promoters (e.g., phorbol esters), and calcium ionophores. A 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor expression and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma. Levels of Hsp27 also correlate with endometrial adenocarcinomas. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock resembles the ecdysteroid and heat shock activation of Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
