It belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor family (FSH/LH/TSH superfamily) and functions as a gonadotropin receptor.
This receptor regulates the development and function of Leydig cells in males and contributes to male secondary sexual characteristic development.
Mutations in the LHCGR gene may lead to disorders such as familial male precocious puberty and male pseudohermaphroditism.
