Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.
This O-methylation is a major pathway for catecholamine degradation.
COMT also plays a key role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used in the treatment of hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
It exists in two forms: a soluble form (S-COMT) and a membrane-bound form (MB-COMT), differing at their N-termini.
Multiple transcript variants are generated through alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
