Target Information

TNF alpha is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to its receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cells, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation.

It exists as multimers of two, three, or five noncovalently linked units but shows a single 17 kDa band under non-reducing SDS-PAGE conditions. Knockout studies in mice suggest TNF alpha has neuroprotective functions and induces tumor necrosis in tumor-bearing mice. It plays a key role in immune responses to bacterial, viral, parasitic, and certain fungal infections, and contributes to tumor cell cytolysis or cytostasis synergistically with interferon-gamma. TNF alpha is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
