Target Information
Lewis A and Lewis B are fucose-containing carbohydrates expressed on red blood cells and other tissues. These carbohydrates belong to the Lewis antigen family, involved in immune recognition, cell adhesion, and inflammation.
Expression of Lewis A and B is determined by the FUT3 gene encoding a fucosyltransferase enzyme. Individuals with FUT3 mutations express either Lewis A or B antigen, while some may be Lewis negative due to FUT2 gene mutations.
Lewis antigen expression can influence disease susceptibility and treatment outcomes, particularly in cancer and inflammatory conditions, as they modulate immune responses and promote tumor progression.
