Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus causing illnesses from mild cold symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The CoV Spike (S) protein is crucial for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors. SARS-CoV-2 RBD shows significantly higher binding affinity to ACE2 than SARS-CoV RBD.
The S1 subunit contains the RBD that specifically binds to ACE2 receptors on target cells.
