Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa form by caspase-1 following inflammasome activation. IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted via an alternative pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a critical role in innate immunity and inflammation, and elevated levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. Neutralizing antibodies against IL-1β have potential therapeutic value.
