Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF)는 염색질 응축 및 DNA 절편화를 유도하는 단백질로, 최근에 동정 및 클로닝되었습니다. 세포자멸사(apoptosis)는 염색질 응축과 핵 절편화 등 형태학적 핵 변화로 특징지어지며, 이는 caspase 계열 단백질 및 기타 단백질의 활성화에 의해 유도됩니다. AIF는 미토콘드리아에 존재하며, 세포자멸사가 유도될 때 핵으로 이동하여 cytochrome c와 caspase-9의 방출을 촉진합니다. AIF는 인간과 생쥐에서 높은 보존성을 보이며, 다양한 조직에서 발현됩니다. AIF 유전자 변이는 미토콘드리아 뇌병증을 유발하는 복합 산화적 인산화 결핍 6형과 관련이 있습니다. 또한, 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변이가 존재하며, 염색체 10에 관련된 유사유전자가 보고되었습니다.
