Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins which catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. There are several isoforms differing in primary structure and localization.
The classical cytosolic/mitochondrial GPx1 (cGPx) is a selenium-dependent enzyme and the first of the GPx family to be discovered. GPx2 (GI-GPx) is expressed at the gastrointestinal epithelium. GPx3 (pGPx) is mainly expressed by the kidney and released into the blood. GPx4 (PH-GPx) is expressed in most tissues and can reduce hydroperoxides integrated in membranes or lipids in low-density lipoprotein. Most mammalian GPx family members, except for the Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific GPx5, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
