Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze various reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids.
Aromatase localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and catalyzes the final steps of estrogen biosynthesis via three successive hydroxylations of the androgen A-ring.
Mutations in this gene can lead to altered aromatase activity, affecting estrogen-related phenotypes. Two transcript variants are expressed.
