PLUNC는 마우스 plunc의 인간 상동체로, 상기도 및 비인두 부위에서 특이적으로 발현됩니다. 이 단백질의 정확한 생물학적 기능은 알려져 있지 않으나, 상기도의 자극 물질에 대한 염증 반응에 관여할 가능성이 제시되었습니다. 또한 비소세포폐암에서 미세전이 검출을 위한 분자 마커로 활용될 가능성이 있습니다.
이 유전자는 3’ UTR의 대체 스플라이싱으로 인한 다양한 전사 변이체를 가지며, 그 중 두 가지의 전장 서열이 알려져 있습니다.
