Target Information
WW domain-containing proteins are found in all eukaryotes and play an important role in regulating various cellular functions such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing.
The WWOX gene encodes a protein with two WW domains and a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase domain (SRD). It is highly expressed in hormonally regulated tissues such as testis, ovary, and prostate, suggesting a role in steroid metabolism.
The protein shares over 90% sequence identity with the mouse ortholog, known as a mediator of TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis, indicating a similar role in human apoptosis and potential tumor suppression.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
