Target Information
Ca²⁺/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CaM kinases) are a subfamily of serine/threonine kinases including CaMKI, CaMKII, and CaMKIV.
CaMKII is a ubiquitously expressed serine/threonine protein kinase activated by Ca²⁺/calmodulin binding and autophosphorylation. It regulates cell cycle and transcription, and is involved in dendritic spine and synapse formation, neuronal plasticity, and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ transport in skeletal muscle.
In neurons, CaMKII plays a structural role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization during plasticity by binding and bundling actin filaments independent of its kinase activity.
