Target Information

E-Cadherin (epithelial cadherin) is a classical cadherin from the calcium-dependent adhesion protein superfamily. It is a cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein with five extracellular cadherin repeats, a transmembrane region, and a conserved cytoplasmic tail. Mutations in this gene are associated with gastric, breast, colorectal, thyroid, and ovarian cancers. Loss of E-cadherin function contributes to cancer progression by promoting proliferation, invasion, and metastasis.

The ectodomain mediates bacterial adhesion to mammalian cells, while the cytoplasmic domain is required for internalization. Transcript variants can arise from splice site mutations. E-cadherin plays a crucial role in maintaining tissue architecture and integrity. In humans, it is encoded by the CDH1 gene on chromosome 16. Reduction or loss of E-cadherin expression in carcinomas correlates with increased tumor invasiveness and metastatic potential.
