Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly during late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that mediates association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and the nucleolus.
Ki-67 expression is cell cycle–dependent, showing perinucleolar localization at G1, nuclear matrix localization at G2, and chromosomal localization during mitosis.
As a proliferation marker, Ki-67 is absent in G0 cells and increases from G1 through mitosis. It is widely used to determine the growth fraction in neoplasms, with a strong correlation between low Ki-67 index and low-grade tumors.
Ki-67 is also utilized as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.
