Target Information
Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. A related hormone, enteroglucagon (or oxyntomodulin), produced in the intestinal mucosa, consists of the 29 amino acid sequence of pancreatic glucagon extended by 8 additional residues at the C-terminus.
The biological activities of pancreatic glucagon include glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis, which counteract insulin action, leading to increased blood glucose levels.
Immunocytochemical studies show glucagon localized in A (alpha) cells, comprising 15–20% of pancreatic islet cells, mainly at the periphery.
Glucagon-related pathologies are primarily associated with tumors (glucagonomas), as no glucagon-cell deficiency or hyperplasia states have been identified.
Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful as cell and tumor markers in immunohistochemical studies and as analytical tools for hormone quantification.
