Target Information

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by addition of the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (encoded by the TERT gene) and an RNA component that serves as a template for telomere repeat synthesis.
Telomerase expression is typically repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Deregulation of telomerase expression may contribute to oncogenesis.
Studies in mice suggest telomerase also participates in chromosomal repair, as de novo synthesis of telomere repeats may occur at double-stranded breaks. Alternatively spliced variants encoding different isoforms of TERT have been identified, though full-length sequences of some variants remain undetermined. Alternative splicing is thought to be one mechanism regulating telomerase activity.
