Target Information
Influenza viruses consist of three types (Influenza A, B, and C), which are members of the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, these viruses can infect both birds and mammals. Influenza virions are roughly spherical and possess a viral envelope containing two main glycoproteins—hemagglutinin and neuraminidase—surrounding the central core of viral RNA and associated proteins. The influenza genome is segmented into seven to eight fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding distinct viral proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, with higher mortality during pandemics.
