Target Information
Voltage-gated sodium channels are selective ion channels that regulate sodium ion permeability in excitable cells. During action potential propagation, sodium channels allow an influx of sodium ions, rapidly depolarizing the cell.
These channels comprise a pore-forming alpha subunit and two beta subunits (β1 and β2). The beta subunits modulate channel expression, gating, and function as cell adhesion molecules.
Alpha subunits type I and III are mainly expressed in neuronal cell bodies, while type II is more abundant along axons.
Beta1 subunit is expressed in brain, skeletal, and cardiac muscle; β1 and β2 are highly expressed in Purkinje cells, and β1 is found in pyramidal cells of the deep cerebellar nuclei.
Impaired voltage-gated sodium channels are associated with diseases such as myotonia.
