Target Information
The sodium channel protein type 8 subunit alpha (Na⁺ CP type VIII alpha) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein that mediates sodium ion permeability of excitable membranes.
Voltage-gated sodium channels consist of one pore-forming alpha subunit and two beta subunits (β1, β2). The beta subunits regulate expression levels, modulate gating, and act as cell adhesion molecules.
Alpha subunits of sodium channels type I and III are mainly expressed in neuronal cell bodies, while type II alpha subunits are abundant along axons.
Sodium channels are essential for rapid signal transduction and neuronal development.
Defects in the SCN8A gene can cause impaired motoneuron growth, progressive paralysis, and early death.
