Target Information
The serum amyloid A (SAA) family comprises several differentially expressed apolipoproteins, including acute-phase SAA1 and SAA2, with SAA1 being the major plasma component. Although primarily synthesized in the liver, extrahepatic production has been reported. In vivo concentrations can increase up to 1000-fold during inflammation. SAA is important for diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases, often elevating earlier and more sharply than CRP. Recent studies suggest a broader role for SAA in physiological and pathological processes.
