Target Information
Carbonic Anhydrase XI (CA11, CA XI) is a member of the carbonic anhydrases (CAs) family of zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. CA XI participates in various biological processes, including respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and gastric acid.
CA XI is likely a secreted protein; however, radical changes at active site residues conserved in catalytic CA isozymes make it unlikely to have enzymatic activity. It shares properties with acatalytic CA isoforms CA VIII and CA X. CA XI is abundantly expressed in the brain and may play a general role in the central nervous system.
