L1CAM/CD171은 면역글로불린 슈퍼패밀리에 속하는 축삭 당단백질로, 여러 면역글로불린 유사 도메인과 type III 섬유연접 유사 반복을 포함하는 세포외 도메인을 가지며, 단일 막관통 서열을 통해 보존된 세포질 도메인과 연결되어 있습니다.
이 세포접착분자는 신경계 발달 과정에서 신경세포의 이동 및 분화에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 CRASH 증후군(뇌량 저형성, 지능저하, 실어증, 경직성 하지마비, 수두증)을 유발하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
신경 특이적 엑손의 대체 스플라이싱 또한 기능적으로 중요한 것으로 추정됩니다.
