OverExpress™ Electrocompetent and Chemically Competent Cells are E. coli strains optimized for expressing toxic proteins from a wide range of organisms, including eubacteria, yeasts, plants, viruses, and mammals.
Their performance in expressing toxic proteins has been validated in over 350 publications.

The OverExpress™ strains contain genetic mutations that confer tolerance to toxic proteins.

• C41(DE3) was derived from BL21(DE3) and includes a mutation preventing cell death during expression of recombinant toxic proteins.
• C43(DE3) was derived from C41(DE3) by selecting for resistance to a different toxic protein, enabling expression of another set of toxic proteins.
• C41(DE3)pLysS and C43(DE3)pLysS carry a chloramphenicol-resistant plasmid encoding T7 lysozyme, a natural inhibitor of T7 RNA polymerase, which helps suppress basal expression and stabilize toxic protein recombinants.
