Target Information
The conserved dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) is a neurotrophic factor for dopaminergic neurons and is highly homologous to mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF). CDNF is expressed at higher levels in heart, skeletal muscle, and testes than in brain. Similar to glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), CDNF can prevent 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, CDNF has been shown to restore dopaminergic function and prevent neuronal degeneration in the substantia nigra, suggesting potential therapeutic use in Parkinson’s disease. At least two isoforms of CDNF are known.
