GABA는 포유류 뇌에서 주요 억제성 신경전달물질로, GABA-A 수용체에서 작용합니다. GABA-A 수용체는 리간드 개폐 염화 이온 채널이며, 벤조디아제핀과 같은 약물에 의해 염화 이온 전도성이 조절될 수 있습니다. 최소 16가지 이상의 GABA-A 수용체 소단위가 확인되었으며, 동일 단백질을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이체도 보고되었습니다.
