Target Information
TEF1 (Transcriptional enhancer factor 1) is a nuclear protein belonging to the TEA/ATTS domain family. It is expressed in various cell types and regulates the expression of numerous genes. TEF family members have a conserved DNA-binding domain, and TEF-1 binds to GT-IIC, SphI/II, and M-CAT sequences. It also interacts with the proximal regulatory element (PRE) of transforming growth factor-alpha, which is overexpressed in many cancers. TEF-1 represses transcription in placental cells and is phosphorylated by PKC isozymes, reducing its DNA-binding capability. This suggests a role in PKC inhibition and tumorigenesis. Dimerization of TEF-1 may be essential for its function in gene transcription regulation.
