Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30,000 people per year in the USA.
In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in specimens obtained from patients in Mexico and the United States.
The virus spread globally, and on June 11, 2009, WHO declared it a pandemic.
Influenza A virus has:
- 16 possible Hemagglutinin (HA) surface proteins
- 9 possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins
HA facilitates viral attachment, while NA is involved in viral release.
Both proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The 2009 H1N1 strain combined human, swine, and avian influenza genes with two new pig H3N2 virus genes from Eurasia.
This unique genetic makeup led to distinct antigenic properties compared with seasonal influenza A (H1N1), suggesting limited human immunity to the new strain, though older age groups showed some protection.
