Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, causing over 30,000 deaths per year in the USA. In 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged, spreading globally and declared a pandemic by WHO.
Influenza A virus expresses one of sixteen Hemagglutinin (HA) proteins and one of nine Neuraminidase (NA) proteins. HA mediates viral attachment, while NA facilitates viral release. Both proteins trigger immune responses that can prevent infection or reduce replication.
The 2009 H1N1 strain combines human, swine, and avian influenza genes with new Eurasian pig H3N2 virus genes. Its distinct antigenic properties limit human immunity compared to seasonal H1N1 strains, though older individuals may have partial protection.
