Target Information
Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a 20 kDa protein belonging to the IL-6 receptor family. It binds to a heterodimeric membrane receptor composed of a LIF-specific subunit (gp190 or LIFR) and gp130, which is shared among other IL-6 family members.
LIF expression occurs in various tissues such as thymus, lung, and neuronal tissue. It can be upregulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNFα and IL-17. Elevated LIF levels have been observed in rheumatoid arthritis, neural injury, systemic inflammation, and tuberculosis.
LIF is best known for inhibiting embryonic stem cell differentiation in mice and promoting stem cell self-renewal. Human and mouse LIF share 79% sequence homology and exhibit cross-species activity, though stem cell differentiation inhibition is mouse-specific.
