Target Information
Tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial infection and a major global health threat.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the alveoli via airborne transmission and is engulfed by alveolar macrophages but resists destruction.
It is suspected that the bacterium survives by preventing fusion of the phagosome and lysosome.
Accumulation forms a tubercle, spreads to lymph nodes, and becomes systemic.
Emerging multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains pose a considerable public health concern.
