Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene regulates pancreatic beta-cell function and is highly similar to JIP-1, a mouse protein involved in the regulation of c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (MAPK8). It prevents MAPK8-mediated activation of transcription factors and reduces IL-1 beta and MEKK1-induced apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, it acts as a DNA-binding transactivator of the glucose transporter GLUT2. RE1-silencing transcription factor (REST) represses expression of this gene in insulin-secreting beta cells. Mutations have been associated with type 2 diabetes susceptibility.
