Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement, which plays an important role in inflammatory and cell killing processes. It consists of alpha and beta polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. The activation peptide C5a, an anaphylatoxin with strong spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, is derived from the alpha chain. The C5b cleavage product forms a complex with C6, initiating formation of the membrane attack complex. Mutations cause complement component 5 deficiency, linked to recurrent infections, liver fibrosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
