Angiotensin II는 강력한 혈관수축 호르몬으로, 알도스테론 분비의 주요 조절자이며 혈압과 체액량 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. AGTR1 유전자는 Angiotensin II의 주요 심혈관계 효과를 매개하는 type 1 수용체를 암호화합니다. 또한, 허혈성 또는 경색성 심근의 혈류 회복 후 발생하는 재관류 부정맥의 생성에도 관여할 수 있습니다. 과거에는 AGTR1B라는 관련 유전자가 존재한다고 여겨졌으나, 현재는 인간에서 단일 type 1 수용체 유전자만 존재하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이 유전자는 여러 가지 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이체를 가집니다.
