Target Information
Defensins form a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides produced by neutrophils. Members of this family share high sequence similarity. The DEFB1 gene encodes beta-defensin 1, an antimicrobial peptide involved in epithelial surface resistance to microbial colonization. It is located near defensin alpha 1 and has been implicated in cystic fibrosis pathogenesis.
