Target Information

The jellyfish Aequorea victoria contains Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP Tag) that emits green light in its bioluminescence reaction. GFP is widely used as a reporter protein for gene expression in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, and as a protein tag in cell culture and multicellular organisms.

As a fusion tag, GFP enables localization studies, protein movement tracking, and research on subcellular compartment dynamics. GFP technology has provided significant insights into living cell physiology.

GFP is a 27 kDa monomeric protein that autocatalytically forms a fluorescent pigment. The wild-type protein absorbs blue light (395 nm) and emits green light (508 nm) without requiring additional cofactors. GFP fluorescence is stable, species-independent, and suitable for various applications including gene expression monitoring, protein localization, protein–protein interaction studies (yeast two-hybrid), and FRET-based distance measurements.
