Target Information
Ribosomes are the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
The RPS19 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S19E family. It is located in the cytoplasm.
Mutations in RPS19 cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia, characterized by reduced erythroid precursors. This indicates potential extra-ribosomal functions in erythropoietic differentiation and proliferation.
Higher expression of RPS19 has been observed in some primary colon carcinomas compared to normal tissues. Multiple processed pseudogenes of RPS19 are dispersed throughout the genome.
