Target Information

Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological processes including arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins that become active upon cleavage by extracellular proteinases.
MMP-7 specifically degrades proteoglycans, fibronectin, elastin, and casein, and differs from most MMP family members by lacking a conserved C-terminal protein domain. It plays a role in wound healing and may regulate defensin activity in the intestinal mucosa. The MMP7 gene is part of a cluster located on chromosome 11q22.3.
